Interview with David Hopkins, a passionate creative who challenges the boundaries of conventional design

We meet David Hopkins, a collage art designer who blends floral elements, vintage images, new ideas, vibrant colours, and an original perspective system in his works, aiming to provoke a smile from the viewer.

Throughout your life, you have always been surrounded by sculptors, painters, DJs, graphic designers, and musicians. Has this influenced your art? How?

I imagine it’s because having these creatives so close inspired my imagination and influenced me to create.

Which do you prefer, traditional cut-and-paste collages or digital collages?

I’m really a fan of both, so I mix them in the final work. I use the digital part for its high quality and then add cutouts on top or behind the digital pieces, and even add paint to bring the work to life.

What inspires you to create your collages? What elements are usually present in your projects?

The desire to create is always there; seeing something in a book, on TV, or even a person on the street. Then the image appears. It’s much easier to accept that than when someone asks for something. I like typography, clean lines and edges, and high-quality digital images of people. The style and look, something catches the eye and says, that would look great.

What effect do you hope to generate in the viewer with your works?

I hope it gives the same feeling as it does to me, an attractive moment for the eye – an Eye Candy Moment, as well as seeing through the messy collage and a moment of wonder about how it all works.

Large brands like Adobe have counted on you to moderate their design tool Adobe Express on Facebook and to help other designers. What do you think you can contribute to that community and especially to online design?

I feel very honoured to be able to offer my knowledge and help to the Insiders on the Facebook page and what I can offer as an Adobe Express Ambassador. I hope to inspire them to be creative, and if my help works for them, then it will be a great feeling, especially seeing what they create. I must say, it makes me smile to see someone’s first design and offer the support that makes their creative talent flow.

What attracted you to Amàre Beach Hotel Marbella to exhibit in this space?

The Amàre Beach Hotel has a history of superb artists who have been lucky enough to add colour and artistic life to such a wonderful space. It’s such a fresh space; the indoor feeling is very comfortable and relaxing. Being part of this is a fantastic honour.

What themes have you based your exhibition at Amàre Beach Hotel Marbella on?

The installation is all about SURREALIST POP ART. Some pieces shout Centre Stage. Another group of images are simply irresistible, making it totally POP. The Fantasy Animal designs bring some areas to life with surrealism. But let’s be realistic, all the hits are about Making It Pop.
